State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC), Winning Consortium, and Aluminum Corporation of China (Chalco) have all announced plans to build alumina projects in Guinea, with the main production phase concentrated between the end of 2027 and 2029. The overseas alumina supply structure, primarily based in Africa, is unlikely to change in the short term. Major mining companies have clearly stated and increased their investments in Guinea, focusing more on securing bauxite exports and maintaining domestic production supply in the past two years.
Based on the aforementioned news regarding bauxite mining in Guinea and Indonesia, China’s reliance on overseas bauxite has been steadily increasing in recent years. Companies will inevitably face more pressing resource control policies and increasing investment in resource-extracting countries. The root cause remains the already clearly saturated and excessive alumina production capacity in China. While the industry is tactically pushing for extreme cost reductions and differentiation to survive, the risks to resource strategic security are also significantly increasing. Controllable and measured development still requires clear policy guidance.
